Dead Man Walking
In the movie "Dead Man Walking", the prominent characters all adhere to the morals of Christianity. Although they all subscribe to the same set of beliefs and teachings, they each have their own way of interpreting them, regarding the death penalty. By looking at each character's view pertaining to capitol punishment for Matthew Poncelet, whether it be Sister Helen, Matthew, Mr. Delacroix or the Percys, each have a divergent opinion on the death penalty and mold Christianity to fit their own beliefs. Sister Helen became a nun to give back to the community which gave her good Christian morals and values. By becoming a nun she was able to teach others to respect life and become more like Jesus (A Son of God). As the heroine of the movie Sister Helen played the role of the "good Samaritan". Throughout the movie she believes that murder is wrong, and that belief remains unchanged. Regarding the death penalty, she holds the Christian moral that people should love each other and themselves, and let God be the judge of wrong doings. When confronted with Matthew, Sister Helen tries to see the good in him and show him the respect she believes he deserves. She believes that there is good in all man and that every person deserves
He followed the ideal of, the truth setting him free. Sister Helen is being torn apart because she does not want to hurt anyone's feelings. He was now facing death as a punishment for his immoral previous acts. I believe it is important to continuously seek other methods of punishment. During the last scenes the thematic message is expressed through Mr. The littlest feeling of sympathy for Matthew, allows him so let go of the bonds of hatred to which he was initially accustomed to. you start to hate and resent everyone. This was a turning point in his attitude in understanding right and wrong. As he does not know "why he showed up," he also isn't ready to talk to Sister Helen. Because, as we see it in the criminal justice system's death penalty, two wrongs don't make a right. As Matthew became the "dead man walking" and was put on the stretcher, he took on the form of Jesus on the cross. Delacroix) reconciles with love (Sister Helen), and they pray together in the chapel. Contrary to them, are the parents of Walter Delacroix.
