A Positive View on a Negative Artform

Just as the majority of us do, the 4th century philosopher Aristotle had a fascination with tragedy. The lure for him was enough that he made a point to figure out what draws in the everyday person to this grisly form of entertainment. Through his philosophical research, he found a few reasons to help explain its drawing power.

The first reason Aristotle came up with was imitation of real life. He figured that the people attending plays acted out with drama were being drawn in by the portrayal of real life. His belief behind this theory was that people learn from imitation, and because of that, they keep coming back. Another reason the imitation was keeping people in seats was that the plays let the viewer see aspects of life that they had no idea about. The third and final reason I’ll use to help show why people listen to gangsta’ rap is that by seeing tragedy, we become more aware of it. By listening to their lyrics, you can tell these rappers have been through it all and know the ways of the streets. We’ve all been in a bad mood and started doing something to take our mind of it, and because of it forgot about it in the process. By hearing ID rap, “Every city that I mash through, there’s at least sixty niggas that’ll blast you,” on the song Sophisticated Thugs, you know that it’s probably the truth. Also by knowing these problems exist, you allow yourself the chance to take better precautions to stop them from affecting you. When I listen to Blade of the Eastside Chedda Boyz rap, “These streets ain’t safe” about Detroit, I’ll know better then to go to the city without keeping a look over my shoulder. Aristotle believed that when people watched the dramas preformed on stage their minds were drawn to something that they enjoyed, which made them forget about whatever may have been ailing them. Since this directly led into my topic of why people listen to gangsta’ rap, it helped me make sense of the reason people listen to music which many feel has nothing but negative intentions. It’s their way of venting their problems, and by listening to them vent, the listeners loose themselves in the rapper’s problems, while forgetting their own. The often sorrow-filled and gruesome form of music has become a mainstay on the radios and in the CD players of people across the country, and even worldwide. If people don’t get a chance to a positive side to gangsta’ rap then they’ll never truly know the good that it can bring to everyone.

Most rap artists do songs where they tell stories about things that have happened to them. If someone is captivated by Biggie and his music, they’re going to want to know more about his lifestyle, regardless if it’s negative or positive. ” A lot of listeners can’t totally relate to how Kurupt feels.
