Skate Boarding Through the 50

Imagine that you and your friends are going to go surfing. You wake up really early wax your board and get your self amped for the day. The weather report from the day before predicted seven foot waves. When you get there its flater than a roller rink. Alas all is not lost for the school next door to your favorite beach has concrete waves frozen in time. So you and your friends grab your other boards and head towards the school for a long day of sidewalk surfing.

Maybe this hasn’t happened to you. You may never have surfed in your life much less skateboarded.

But perhaps you have wondered how skate boarding began.

Skate boarding began in the 50’s on the west coast here in California.

60’s

Skate boarding soared to new hights thanks to publicity the young sport received.

The end

With the creation of the ollie the sport had abondened its surfing roots and began to establish itself as its own sport.

In 1975 the company road rider (manufactuer of boards) came out with the first precision bearing wheels. (jay adams, stacy peralta, and shogo kubo) Thus the sport of pool riding and vert skating were born.

He created his skateboard wheel manufacturing company Cadillac Wheels.

All of these new products helped the sport to rise in popularity agin.

First marketed skate board sold in 1959 it was the roller derby skateboard.

A select few discovered that pools offered a curved transition from flatland to vertical.

Boards became increasingly more diffucult to find and the die hards of the sport had to go back to tearing apart rollerskates and 2*4’s .

The publisher of surf guide began to promote skateboarding (larry Stevenson) formed Makaha first ever professional skateboards.

70’s

In 1973 east coast surfer frank nasworthy decided that polyurethane might be a good material to make skateboard wheels out of.

The boards themselves started getting wider as to gain more stability. (like a 4*4)

Soon word spread of these new wheels and skaters were eager to get there hands on them.

This ended decades of loose ball bearings.
