Surf's Up

             The sun, the beach, the salty ocean water---all of these things remind me of surfing. Watching people surf on television or at the beach, looks rather easy, but it's not. Surfing is exciting and fun, but definitely not easy. These complicated factors include; the weather, the huge waves and the dangerous waters beneath. The whole learning process can be a bit intimidating. Before you get started there are a few things that you must know.
             The very first thing you need is equipment. Luckily surfing is one of those sports that do not have a lot of equipment and it is fairly cheap. The most important thing you need is a surf board. Since you are a beginner you should buy a used board. This is a good idea because boards are expensive and fragile. The surf board is the part that you stand on while gliding along the waves. The second thing you'll need is called a leash. The leash is strapped to your ankle and connects up to your board which prevents it the board from floating away. Board wax is the third piece of equipment that is needed. It is used to smooth the underside of your board to give traction. If your board already has traction you might not need the wax. Unless you are planning on surfing at a nude beach it would be a good idea to bring something to wear. A swimsuit and a pair of board shorts would be fine. Another option is a wetsuit. Although they are expensive most surfers prefer them. The last thing that you need, you can find right in the comforts of your own home, sun block. Since you will be spending so much time out in the hot sun and in the water it would be a good idea to bring sunscreen and apply it several times throughout the day, especially because you are in the water and it tends to wear off quickly.
