Cape Fear Psychological Review

Martin Scorsese’s Cape Fear is a remake of the 1962 classic by Robert Mitchum. The movie is about a lawyer and his family tormented by a homicidal maniac who blames the man for his many years spent in prison. The prisoner, played by Robert De Niro, spends all of his time tormenting the lawyer, Nick Nolte. De Niro’s character Max Cady was charged with rape of a 16-year-old girl. At the time of the trial, Nolte’s character Sam, received evidence that would have gotten Cady off. Sam could not bear to let Cady off, knowing that he had done such a thing to this young girl. While in prison, Cady learned to read, and taught himself the law. He came to realize what Sam had done to him. After 14 years of imprisonment, he comes out seeking vengeance on Sam Bowden. Sam, his wife Leigh, and daughter Danny, all becomes victim to Cady’s games. From scene to scene, you never see Cady actually acting out towards the Bowden’s, but you just know that he was behind the horror. Throughout the movie, Cady’s psychological disorders become quite evident. Although the movie starts with Cady leaving prison, his psychological problems began before his release from prison.

Fourteen years before the movie takes place, Sam

. . .

All of which Max Cady did with his prior victims. I would definitely recommend this movie to people in the class because it managed to keep me in suspense throughout the entire movie. Cady pretends to be interested in her, and gets her into bed with him. He poisoned the family’s dog, causing him to die.

Fourteen years after Sam Bowden allowed his client Max Cady to go to prison, this man was back to haunt him.

Making sure that Sam suffers becomes Cady’s job. Cady managed to get in and out of Sam’s house. Although he has not been with a woman for years, he chooses to violate Lori, and beat her, rather than make love to her. Cady goes through great lengths to torture Sam and his family. Towards the end of the movie, Cady gets on the houseboat and beats up Sam. While this seems like a drastic step for Cady to take, just to spite Sam, it just shows signs of his sexual disorder, sexual sadism. The satisfaction that he gets from it almost seems psychotic. On the day that he talked to Leigh, he saw Danny, Leigh and Sam’s 16-year-old daughter. This movie is displays a textbook case of psycho criminal going insane in prison.

The first time in which Max Cady really strikes at Sam, is when he beats, rapes, and bites the cheek of Sam’s mistress, Lori.
