Pornography by margeret atwood

             It's accessible to anyone who wants to see it. You can find it almost anywhere you go. It's pornography. People have such strong views on the subject. The ones who love it think the ones who hate it are prudes and the ones who hate it think the ones who love it are perverts. Could there be some way to stop this kind of thinking? Or are people sticking with their opinions on the subject.
             In Margaret Atwood's essay titled "Pornography," she proposes her idea that by getting rid of people's "you're a prude, you're a pervert," way of thinking, society could possibly come to an agreement on the subject. She describes a conversation she had, with a man, on the subject of pornography, in which by pornography he had meant naked bodies and sex; she had meant violent unpleasant things happening to women and children. Atwood compares the views of people in favor of censorship with those of people who are not. She argues that people in favor believe that pornography exploits women through the use of degrading images. Atwood says those not in favor believe pornography is freedom of expression. Atwood also explores the reasons for the flood of pornography today. She states the debate on pornography shouldn't just include pornography as entertainment but also as harmful. She explains young men learn about sex from porn and they are influenced by the violent porn they see. Atwood concludes by saying that porn isn't going away and that society needs to make some informed and responsible decisions about how to deal with it.
             Although Atwood doesn't give us too much information on how to make those informed and responsible decisions, she does introduce us to a new way of thinking.
