Rape as a crime of war
Young Girls are systematically raped by entire army units, rather then by a single soldier as before.Girls are taken to soldier camps and held naked in their tents for days on end - many never return homeWoman are strung up naked from tree's, their breasts are lacerated with knives as soldiers tell them that their breasts will never again give new born militants milk Woman and girls are paraded naked through villages while soldiers beat them on their breasts with sticks.Violence against woman especially rape, has added its own brand of shame to recent wars. From conflicts in Bosnia to Peru to Rwanda, girls and woman have been singled out for rape, imprisonment, torture and execution.Rape, identified by psychologists, as be the most intrusive of traumatic events, has been documented in many armed conflicts including those in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Cyprus, Haiti, Liberia, Somalia and Uganda. Sexual violation of women erodes the fabric of a community in a way that few weapons can. Rapes damage can be devastating because of the strong communal reaction to the violation and pain stamped on entire families. The harm inflicted in such cases on a woman by a rapist is an attack on her
Systematic rape is often used as a weapon in " ethnic cleansing". Having already suffered the trauma of rape, woman who then becomes pregnant face further emotional and pschological trauma. While some women have been able to choose abortion, others, who lived in rural areas, were held captive, or lived in communities with religious prohibitions or laws limiting or denying access to abortion may have no choice but to bear the unwanted child. To really understand this trauma, one must consider the additional trauma that woman may have experienced; death of loved ones, loss of ones home & community, dislocation, untreated illness and war related injury. It is rape to be seen and heard and watch and be told to others. The high risk of infection with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV/AIDS, accompanies all sexual violence against women and girls. Refugee women are encouraged to form committees and become involved in camp administration to make them less vulnerable to men who would steal their supplies or force them to provide sex in return for provisions. family and culture, as in many societies woman are viewed as repositories of a community's cultural and spiritual value. To shatter a society; to destroy a people. Some survivors remain controlled, numb, in shock, and denial disbelief. War and civil unrest also contribute to violence in the home. They struggle with reoccurring thoughts about the trauma and find themselves in a state of hyper vigilance; easily startled and always anticipating another attack. These services provide support for women affected by armed conflict in countries such as Bosnia, Burundi, Croatia, Georgia, Liberia, Rwanda, Somalia and the Sudan. On that note, I'd like to leave you with thisThis is not rape out of controlThis is rape under control, It is also rape unto death, rape as a massacre, rape to kill and to make the victims wish they were dead. Commonly reported short term feelings at the time of the rape include shock, a fear of injury or death that can be paralyzing and a sense of profound loss of control over ones life.
