Sex Sells

             Sex in advertising has been a controversial issue for many years. The controversy is whether the use of sexual advertising is offensive to the general public. Lately, people are viewing sex in advertising in a whole new light. As sex is becoming much more explicit in recent years, some people are beginning to become disgusted with it, and are, in many cases being made nervous or uneasy by the bombardment of sexual reference on advertisements. Some people argue that the use of sex in advertisements is degrading and immoral. Although sex appeal is a popular way of advertising a product, some people see it as unacceptable and in poor taste. On the other hand, there are some consumers who feel that using sex to sell is acceptable or even essential. Since the early days of advertising, use of sexual images are a big help for marketers to appeal almost any product to the consumers and to sell their brands. Advertisers manipulate people by targeting a certain group, such as businessmen, athletic women, or teenagers. They then proceed to focus on a desire, hobby, sport, flaw or some other common ground among their targeted group. Not every group of people can relate to a certain sport or desire. However, every human can relate to sexuality. Sex appeal is a useful tool in advertising to sell products and to influence people's point of views.
             The basic concept of using sex appeal in advertising is to draw attention. Attractive bodies are employed to attract attention and stimulate desire, which advertisers hope will then be transferred to the product. For instance, in the February 2003 issue of Lucky magazine, there is a Calvin Klein ad showing a picture of a skinny and beautiful woman in her brassieres. Her head is turned on the side, smiling as she looks on the phrase "Calvin Klein, Heat Seeker." She also looks happy, as if she is having fun wearing the lingerie. Women who see this ad would first
