Antigone

             The tragic hero of a play is the one who has a high stance in society, but because of his/her tragic flaw, a fundamental characters weakness, he/she receives a tremendous fall from his/her good fortune. In the play Antigone, Antigone suffers an unjust punishment, which causes her to fall from the royal family line to a criminal status and is put to death. Thus Antigone is the tragic heroine in this play due to her defiance, love for family, and her role in the kingdom of Thebes.
             Antigone's defiance, stubbornness, and her will to fight for what she believes to be right, contributes to her role as the tragic heroine. Antigone defies Creon's law and buries her brother Polyneices. When Antigone is taken into Creon's palace, she refuses to listen to Creon's reasons and opinions and proclaims that Creon's words are wicked and distasteful to her. She states "God's laws are supreme" therefore, she'll only obeys the gods' laws not man's laws. Others are afraid of Creon; hence, they do not dare to defy his laws. Antigone exclaims that she is not fearful of death but rather wishes death upon her than leaving her brother unburied.
             Antigone's role in the kingdom of Thebes also contributes to the fact that she is the tragic heroine. Antigone is the daughter of King Oedipus and Queen Jocasta, which makes her royalty. As any other woman in ancient Thebes, Antigone does not have a say in the political world; but yet, she dares to challenge the King's laws. Antigone also argues with Creon on how his laws are against the gods' laws, but in his mind are completely following the gods' wills.
