American people hear about reform and ideas surrounding reform every election year. Americans around election time begin to hear new policies that an elected candidate would like to enact or reforms that they will pass when in power. These reforms are made to seem like the key to a brighter tomorrow for everyone. Americans begin to live with a new hope, that this one person will get elected and in taking office make dreams come true. In most cases the reforms that the politicians speak of are thrown by the waste side even if they are elected, and when they are enacted they usually fail to satisfy the American people. When one examines reforms that have come about since the 1930’s one can see many trends in American desires and how they were are were not met when reforms are set into motion by the government.
When speaking of reform in government it is necessary to examine the New Deal set into motion by Roosevelt. Roosevelt enacted a whirlwind of political reform with the hopes of picking America out of unemployment and depression. All three of these small communities have little to no racial intermingling. With school segregation ending in the 1950’s and the end to Jim Crow laws abolished decades ago one would like to view our society as one that is non-racist and beyond the beliefs that some of our ancestors held. The women’s pro-choice movement led to a Supreme Court decision in their favor. Suddenly, following the peace and love movement of the 60’s we are looking at reforms since the 80’s that benefit only the elite in the nation. I do believe that certain special instances exist where an elite man can become a great leader fighting for the rights of the people and I do also feel that Martin Luther King would have been an excellent politician. The African American movement for equal schooling won out in 1954 when Brown v. Though one would have though that this would be different considering they had an understanding of what it was like to struggle the two felt that ones lot in life was based solely on their own merit and hard work. In 1990 just following Regan’s administration dual income households consisting of young couples could not purchase their first home. A situation where a black boy is found dead after a night out on the “white side of town” seems absurd in today’s society. Why then couldn’t one of these movement leaders develop into a good presidential candidate? Since none of them knew how they were going to get the legislation passed and simply went with the cause, they all had to be led to act. The social science professor also has the ability to speak to masses of students on a daily basis; this highlights his or her public speaking potential. Reagan, a republican attacked the conditions that the nation was left in following Carter asking “are you better off now than you were four years ago?” Regan was referring to the rising inflation and unemployment rates that had been showing its wear on the American population.
