The novel To Kill A Mocking Bird by Harper Lee is the story of Jem and scout Finch and their childhood in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama. The title To Kill a Mockingbird has a thematic significance throughout the story. The characters, Tom Robinson, Boo Radley, and Atticus Finch portray “mockingbirds” who “don’t do anything but sing their hearts out and give to make life better for others”.
Throughout the novel Tom Robinson is seen as a “mockingbird” through his kindness and pity for Mayella Ewell. When Tom is giving his testimony he says “I felt right sorry for her, she seemed to try more than the rest of em.” By feeling sorry for her Tom is showing his kindness and good heartedness. Because Tom is a Negro it is not considered right in this society for him to feel sorry for Mayella. Also during his testimon

” Even though blacks are considered savages Tom is a well-mannered person and would never strike a woman white or black. y Tom says “I tried to ‘thout bein’ ugly to her. Because he loved Jem and scout so much it was a reward to him to see them happy every time he left them a gift. Boo hardly ever comes out of the safety of his house but he comes to the aid of those children and risks his life out of the sheer kindness that is in his heart. After the verdict has been read and Atticus is leaving the courtroom Calpurnia says, “jean Louise stand up your father’s passin. Even though people don’t like him for it Atticus still defends Tom Robinson because it is the noble thing to do. ” Boo cared for those children so much he left his personal belongings in the tree to bring the children joy. In the novel scout says, “He gave us two soap dolls, a broken watch and chain, a pair of good-luck pennies, and our lives. Maudie and Aunt Alexandria Atticus defending Tom Robinson Miss Maudie says, “we’re paying the highest tribute we can pay to a man. Tom Robinson is an all around good person and is trying to do good by helping Mayella and to prosecute him would be like shooting a mockingbird. ” Even with Boo’s hardships and though his life was very troublesome he showed that he really loved those children he had not even met.
The mockingbird characteristics continue through Atticus Finch. Persecuting one of them would be a sin “sort of like shootin’ a mockingbird.
