William Faulkner
William Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi on September 25, 1897. He was actually born with the name William Falkner but added the "u" later. His father worked on railroads owned by his grandfather. The railroad was originally purchased by Faulkner's great-grandfather, William C. Falkner. He was an important historical figure and a major influence on William Faulkner's writing. William C. Falkner arrived in Mississippi as a poor youth. Her unwavering standards opposing alcohol and profanity was significant in Faulkner's upbringing. His works weren't immediately accepted so began working periodically in Hollywood as a screenwriter. Inevitably his talent became apparent to the masses as he received critical acclaim and numerous awards including a Nobel Prize and two Pulitzer Prizes. Oddly enough, English was one of his worst subjects. At the peak of his career, William Faulkner died on July 6, 1962 in Byhalia, Mississippi of a heart attack. Faulkner was determined and through a faked British accent and forged letter of recommendation, he was accepted into the Royal Canadian Air Force. The Faulkner family bought a large, aged house in the midst of town square. Faulkner had wanted to join to military, but because of height requirements he was unable. 902 Faulkner's grandfather sold the railroads and the family was forced to begin again in Oxford (Unger 525). William Faulkner began writing poems, novel, and short story. He dropped out of high school in the tenth grade and began working for his grandfather in the bank. Even after death, his works and his memory grew more respected with each generation. He traveled around the world, not only to promote his works, but also for political affairs for the State Department. After World War I he left the air force and attended the University of Mississippi.
