Urban Crimes

For decades researchers have tried to determine why crime rates are stronger and why different crimes occur more often in different locations. Certain crimes are more prevalent in urban areas for several reasons. Population, ethnicity, and inequality all contribute to the more popular urban. Determining why certain crimes occur more often than others is important in Criminal Justice so researchers can find a trend and the police can find a solution. According to the Uniform Crime Reports for the year 1999 aggravated assault, larceny (theft), drug abuse violations, burglary, and alcohol violations were the crimes in urban areas with the highest arrest rates. Every month police departments around the nation file reports of crime to the FBI. These numbers are then added and recorded in the Uniform Crime Reports for that year (Taylor 114). The common crimes above were determined using this process. The Uniform Crime Reports are useful because they represent the actual number of violators arrested. Unfortunately, the Uniform Crime Reports do not record all reported crimes. Many crimes are reported that do not end in arrests therefore it is unclear the actual number of crimes committed in each area. For example, seventy-th

This same "urban-rural" difference has been found in Canada, England, Australia, and the Netherlands. However, some critiques believed that the sudden change of environment played a much larger role than ethnic composition. This results in certain groups using violence more often in their day-to-day encounters, and violence is seen as an acceptable way to solve disagreements. It is much easier for a homeless man or woman to break a window and steal a television than it is for them to counterfeit currency or embezzle funds. Drug and Alcohol violations are not included in the same index but are reported. This is a direct result of the population. Crime is more prevalent where there is poverty, unemployment, lack of social cohesion, and poor living conditions. It is most likely that those individuals view violence and other criminal acts as acceptable behavior. When immigrants first arrived in the United States they typically moved into the poor neighborhoods because that is all they could afford. Violence and property crime in the largest cities are three or four times as high as the rates in rural areas. Aggravated assault falls under the Violent Crime Index whereas larceny and burglary fall under the Property Crime Index of the Part I Index Crimes. Many believe that crime in the cities was caused by the early flood of immigrants, and especially the ones with ethnic criminal history. (Kubrin 1596)Characteristics of cities and neighborhoods have a definite influence on crime. These five most prevalent crimes exist simply because urban areas are so large and cannot support all the lives within them. These findings seem very accurate simply because of the facts.
