A Rose for Emily and The Yellow Wallpaper
"Yellow Roses" In "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner and "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the two main characters of these stories display behavior that some readers may consider "crazy". What is their problem you ask? Could it be cultural?Maybe even personal? Or might it even be a dilemma within them? Well it could be any one. Because of both stories historical settings, which are taking place in the late 1800's, these women are having hard times facing the changes that are occurring around them. In William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily", the character, a Miss Emily Grierson, has trouble dealing with the transition of the Old South to the New South. It drives her to the point where she totally secludes herself from her community. Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper", the character Jane is a delusional mental patient with a doctor for a husband who uses gender as manipulation for her treatment. In my opinion, I feel it is the people surrounding them that is causing these women to exhibit
This happened mainly because ofthe pressure the town put on her because she was an older, unmarried, respected name. These teachings weren't those of the town in that day and age so it played a big part in Emily's mental breakdowns. " While this was true, the good colonel was dead for a good 10 years. Though very caring and loving of Jane, he treats her likea father than a husband. But when she finds out that he was not the marrying type she poisoned him and kept him ather house, in her bed, so she can lay with him forever. He thought no one was good enough to marry his daughter and he made all her decisions until his death. He keeps insisting that her problem isn't that serious. "I wonder if they all come out of that wallpaper as I did?" She becomes infatuated with the wallpaper andstarts to tear it down hoping to believe that she wouldn't be put back in. Her family name held great distinction in the town of Jefferson. When a man named Homer Barron finally broke her out of her shell by showing affection, it seemed she was back to normal. " The town tries to collect taxes from her but she claims " I have no taxes in Jefferson, Colonel Sartoris explained it to me. he supporting characters bring a sense of drama to the settings by prejudging and coercing Miss Emily and Jane to a point where they become mentally unstable. This was the way women of that time period were sometimes treated and percieved. " I didn't realize for a long time what the thing was that showed behind, that dim sub-pattern, but now I am quite sure it is a woman. Page #2 When everyone in her past dies, she still holds on to the past instead of moving along with the future.
