Braveheart vs. The Odyssey
The Odyssey As Compared to Modern Day Braveheart In ancient times, many stories were written to show religious significance or the common beliefs of the time period. These early stories can be related to modern day films. The video of The Odyssey had a religious theme and focused on the idea of fate. On the other hand, the movie Braveheart shows that man must fight to gain his freedom. Although The Odyssey and Braveheart have contrasting views, the lives of the main characters share similar aspects. The messages that are conveyed by the two stories are different, but both stress a common belief of the day. The message of The Odyssey is that man is nothing without the gods. When Odysseus was trying to get home, he came across several gods and goddesses who presented obstacles that prevented him from successfully reaching his destination. Finally, when Odysseus met his last challenge, the god of the ocean brought to his attention the impact that gods and goddesses have on all mortals’ lives. Without understandi . . .
In contrast, Braveheart was set in a more modern time period and took place in Scotland. Odysseus and William Wallace had similar characteristics despite their contrasting statuses. First of all, the main characters were from completely different classes of people. I also agree with the acts of William Wallace in that he would not accept the life of a slave over dying for his free will. Because of the conquests taking place during William Wallace’s lifetime, the audience focused more on the lower class people being taken over by larger nations and being forced to change their way of life. Although I do not believe in many gods, I accept that one God controls what happens in my life just like Odysseus realized that the gods chose his fate. Like Odysseus, he wanted to regain the way of life he knew rather than live under someone else’s authority. Both works sent a message out to the people of their nation. In both stories, I would have reacted similarly in the case of each character. The Odyssey and Braveheart have both similarities and differences. As in both Braveheart and The Odyssey, I feel that a person should fight for what they believe no matter what the consequences may be. The audiences for both movies, The Odyssey and Braveheart, were dissimilar because they were set in different time periods and locations. During this time period, a lot of significance was placed upon fate and the influence of the gods. ng this concept, he would never make it home to his wife and son. As a member of Greek upper class society, Odysseus fought for his country, as it was his duty and his life.
