MISFITs in society

You All are Laughing at me Because I am Different, I’m Laughing at You Because You’re different Too

..I grew up in a wild hood, as a hazardous youth

with a f***ed up childhood, that I used as an excuse…

-“Cleain Out my Closet” by Eminem in

Society has a certain standard that people follow to be called normal, but when a person doesn’t follow those standards they are classified as a misfit. With these standards to follow society has become bias towards people who doesn’t abide by them and develop absurd remarks. According to Webster’s Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary: misfit is one person that is unable to adjust to one’s environment or circumstances or its considered to be disturbingly different from others. We view misfits as the “weird person” in our society, but I believe that society fails to recognize that they are responsible for the shaping these people into who they are.

A misfit’s behavior can be deciphered through their parents’ influence, but society fails to recognize that. Parents are a major influence in our lives which is one of the factors that determines who we are and how we act. I believe that parental influence toward a child’s behavior is important and that society shou

Society holds a big part in our lives creating a person who they are and what they want to be, but if we continue to shut off people because we choose to classify them as misfits in our society we are solely to blame for their conditions of what we created. Another misfit notorious for his controversial hip/hop lyrics, Eminem, has a similar situation like Sonny. She was treated as an incompetent person by her husband John because of her condition, provoking her sickness: “What is it little girl… Don’t go walking like that-you’ll get cold. People with different lifestyles and attitudes can be fixed with proper consideration from society, so we can understand their way of living and attitude. People view Eminem as a misfit because of his radical lyrics towards society’s views about him. ” Forced to live in isolation in a room she hates and her husband treating her like a little child, the narrator displays the affects of society’s treatment to misfits; isolation and emotional abuse. Eminem, a controversial hip/hop singer, and the protagonist Sonny in “Sonny’s Blues,” can relate to misfits who had neglected influences from their parents and society fails to identify their relationship with their parents and the cause of their behavior. Emily in “A Rose for Emily” and Lorraine in “The Two” can represent how choosing your own lifestyle can be dangerous to our reputation in society. Through Sonny’s mother we can see how their mother son relationship is; the mother is more reliant towards the older brother of Sonny to take care of Sonny showing how the mother has little or no influence over Sonny. By accepting something that doesn’t fit in our society we can live in a less harmful civilization, thus making society livable and peaceful to one another. The massacre at columbine was a result of the long term abuse, On April 20, 1999 at Columbine High School suspects Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 13 people and themselves, and more than 20 were wounded. So you could try to justify the way you treated me, ma?

…See what hurts me the most, is you wont admit you was wrong

But how dare you try to take what you didn't help me to get

You selfish bitch, I hope you fucking burn in hell for this shit!

Remember when Ronnie died and you said you wished it was me?

Well guess what, I am dead, dead to you as can be

Viewing how misfits act, society is no help to their lifestyle and is instigating the behavior.

Society classifies people as misfits because they choose to live different lifestyles, but I believe that classifying a person because of their lifestyle is an illogical way to determine the worth of a human being. For example, Emily was classified as a misfit in her society because she chose to live an isolated lifestyle, a lifestyle her society viewed as abnormal: “After her father’s death she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw her at all” (Faulkner 350).
