With these standards to follow society has become bias towards people who doesn't abide by them and develop absurd remarks. According to Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary: misfit is one person that is unable to adjust to one's environment or circumstances or its considered to be disturbingly different from others. We view misfits as the "weird person" in our society, but I believe that society fails to recognize that they are responsible for the shaping these people into who they are. A misfit's behavior can be deciphered through their parents' influence, but society fails to recognize that. For example, Emily was classified as a misfit in her society because she chose to live an isolated lifestyle, a lifestyle her society viewed as abnormal: "After her father's death she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw her at all" (Faulkner 350). The narrator of "The Yellow Wallpaper" and the two suspects of the Columbine High School shooting are reminders of the long term abuse how society classifies and patronize those who they feel are different which ultimately causes adverse effects.
