Black Beauty by Anna Sewell

The novel "Black Beauty" by Anna Sewell is a story about a horse's life and how different owners treated him. Even though the novel is intended to be a children's book, parents can use it as a manual on how and how not to raise their children. This novel was a milestone because few people had ever considered their carelessness or thoughtlessness to animals. This novel is not only about animal cruelty, however. It is also about cruelty in general, patience, perseverance, and caring for what you are responsible for. The novel makes you question man's treatment of his pets and perhaps make you more sensitive to an animal's needs. The author is trying to teach us that the cruel and thoughtless treatment of animals is not right. Parents can use this novel to teach their children how and how not to treat animals and other human beings. While children are reading this book, they can understand how their own consideration of others may benefit all.
The novel tells the story of Beauty's life, from the horse's early days in the stables of a peaceful English country house to its later adventures pulling the carriage of a difficult lady, working as a taxi horse, and finally hauling heavy freight wagons. It's downhill all the way until the happy ending, where Beauty is put out to pasture. Just as in human life, some masters are wise and kind and stupid and mean. The novel teaches us about life and the hardships that come with it. Like Black Beauty, sometimes, when we have a roof over our heads with plenty of food, we do not realize how hard and difficult it is when we are poor. Parents can use this novel to teach their children that not all people have the same living situations and should not take things for granted. Beauty learned this when he was sold from a kind master to a cruel master. No matter how cruel his masters were, he always worked hard to accomplish his goals.
