3 It was not night, for all the bells
1. 5 It was not frost, for on my flesh
15 And could not breathe without a key,
17 When everything that ticked has stopped
19 Or grisly frosts, first autumn morns,
21 But most like chaos, stopless, cool,
22 Without a chance, or spar,23 Or even a report of land
To express her own pain by my opinion, or pain of the main character from this poem Emili Dickinson uses a different techniques and some of the rhetorical figures. Imagery, negations, metaphors, and different meanings of the words are all used to demonstrate that part
. . .
She needs someone’s help to find the way out of that chaos. Her life "was fitted on a frame and [she] could not breathe without a key. But here she cannot even feel anger because in death there is no one to feel the anger against. " It always makes one feel better when he can change something or turn the feeling of nothing into something else. The feeling of the character is so overwhelming, unbearable, and intangible that it cannot be described in words, and can only be expressed through negations of emotions and powerful imagery. Instead, she describes the chaos she feels by using negations of opposing forces, "it was not fire it was not heat,” and then saying that she feels them all at once. I just hope that she found someone who can help her. She does not even use a word such as "agony,” or "grief" anywhere in the poem in order to emphasize that her feeling cannot be condensed into a simple word. The feeling of shock is like hanging in the middle of space, outside of measured time.
What the character feels can be best described as "utter nothing,” or "Chaos without chance or spar.
All the way through the poem Emili Dickinson is trying to find her key, her “land, “but she cannot do it by herself. " This is like the first feeling of shock, when the conception of time and space is completely different. of her died in the moment of death of her loved one, in the moment of awareness of his death at the burial. The pain of the character in this poem is beyond that.
