Gatsby throws huge, extravagant parties on a weekly base to not only come in contact with his past love, but to "fit in" or relate to the wealthy. The color green, which symbolizes hope, youth and spring, is also symbolic to Gatsby?s character. Gatsby also portrays himself as an Oxford graduate, who is becoming wealthy on a chain of drug stores. he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling. The green light, representing a guided light for ambition, dreams, and optimism is symbolic to the American Dream. Gatsby uses the money for his lust for pleasure and to make himself attractive to Daisy. Immigrants portrayed it as the American Dream while Fitzgerald made it synonymous to the "green light. n love with not only a women, but her wealth, surroundings and charm.
