Lab Stuff-Animal Tissues

Objective: We observed and identified the shape, structure, and function of animal tissues.Materials: I used a pen, paper, my lab textbook, prepared slides of cross sections and microscopes.Method: Listed to lecture, read my lab book on Animal Tissues, made drawings of the structures that we observed. Results: The different tissues observed are as follows:1. Epithelial Tissue-forms continuous layer, or sheet, over the entire body surface and most of the body's inner cavities. Types of Epithelial Tissue:a. Simple Squamous Epithelium-a single layer of thin, flat, many-sided cells, each with a central nucleus. It lines internal cavities, the heart, and all the blood vessels and parts of the urinary, respiratory, and male reproductive tracts. It functions in filtration; diffusion; and osmosis.b. Stratified Squamous Epithelium-consists of many layers of cells. The innermost layer produces cells that are first cuboidal or columnar in shape, but as the cells push toward the surface, they become flattened. It is the outer region of the skin, the epidermis. The cells move toward the surface, flatten, accumulate keratin, and die. It also lines the mouth, throat, anal canal, and vagina. It

Simple Cuboidal Epithelium-a single layer of cube-shaped cells, each with a central nucleus. Red blood cells are more numerous than white blood cells. They consist of cells surrounded by a matrix that usually contains fibers. Pseudostratified Ciliated Columnar Epithelium-appears to be layered, while actually all cells touch the basement membrane. Simple Columnar Epithelium-single layer of tall, cylindrical cells, each with a nucleus near the base. Its function is to wave back and forth and move mucus and debris up toward the throat so that it cannot enter the lungs. It is beneath the skin, beneath most epithelial layers. Cardiac Muscle-found only in the heart and is involuntary in contractions. Many cilia are located on the free end of each cell. Skeletal muscle contraction is voluntary. It occurs beneath the skin, where it insulates the body. Two or more tissues are grouped together to make an organ. The striations are caused by the arrangement of Contractile filaments (actin and myosin) in the fibers.
