Bipolar Disorder: Patty Duke

Anna Marie Duke was born on December 14, 1946, into a disturbed household. Her father was a raging alcoholic and her mother had unstable emotions ranging from perfectly fine one minute to suicidal the next. Anna's mother had severe periods of depression and was first hospitalized when Anna was 6 years old. Her mother was hospitalized two more times before she was finally diagnosed as having a manic-depressive illness. Her parents were rarely not fighting and eventually her mother kicked her father out. When her father left, her mother became more physically abusive with Anna and her two siblings. Anna's older brother Raymond, an aspiring an actor brought Anna to the limelight through his managers when they discovered her hidden talents and eventually change her name to "Patty." At just eight years old, these managers told the young girl "Anna" was dead and she was "Patty now." This lead her to have an obsession with her own death. Patty went to live with these managers named Mr. and Mrs. Ross, in order to increase her chances of enhancing her acting career. They got her s part in The Miracle Worker, as Helen Keller and during preparation for the role Patty began drinking heavily and usin

Patty shows many signs of having a bipolar disorder. During this marriage Patty encountered many episodes of depression, used drugs excessively, attempted suicide, and became anorexic. Patty turned to substance abuse in order fill her social life. When Patty was manic, it seemed as though she was on top of the world but often had to abuse drugs and alcohol to achieve this euphoria. There were many times when Patty was so depressed that she remembers sleeping all the time, being unable to stay awake, and even attempting suicide. Another support of this diagnoses is that she says often times she will open her eyes and be driving down a road and have no idea where she is or how she got there. Patty believed her parents abandoned her both emotionally and physically. Another stressor she encountered would be the sexual abuse she endured from the Rosses. There are many psychosocial stressors that could have negatively affected Patty Dukes mental health. There are also recorded cases or signs of severe depression throughout her life. Throughout Patty's life there would be two more failed marriages and finally in 1986 she married Michael Pearce, her fourth and final husband. Severe mood swings are a major symptom of a bipolar disorder. These memories of being sexually abused, which produced a feeling of worthlessness and a lack of trust, were suppressed until Patty was twenty years old.
