To Kill a Mocking Bird

To Kill a Mockingbird is a book written by Harper Lee. This book is told through the eyes of a six-year-old girl by the name of Scout Finch. It tells what she experiences with her brother, Jem, and their good friend, Dill. The setting of this book is in a town called Maycomb, Alabama in 1930. This book deals with some issues such as racism, discrimination, and prejudice. Scout and Jem's mother died four years ago, and they are taking care of their father, Atticus, and the cook Calpurina.

The Radleys are very mysterious and keep to themselves. They don't believe in going to church on Sundays either, they just stay inside and worship. Later in the book, when Miss Maudie's house is on fire, Boo puts a blanket over Scout's shoulders to keep her warm.
Scout's father Atticus is a lawyer. He studied law in Montgomery. He has to defend a black man by the name of Tom Robinson. Mr. Ewell had accused Tom of raping his daughter Mayella. Atticus proves that Tom Robinson is innocent in his cross-examination. He also proves that it is Mr. Ewell that is guilty of raping and beating his own daughter. The jury still declares Tom guilty. Later, Tom tries to escape from prison and is killed. Atticus tries to explain that from the moment Tom had walked into the courtroom to stand in front of an all white jury, his fate had been sealed. It is at this time that Atticus explains to Scout, "It is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they don't do one thing but to sing their hearts out for us."
