Leonardo Da Vinci

Leonardo da Vinci, one of the great artists of the High Renaissance, was a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, and scientist. His paintings influenced the Italian art style for more that a century after his death. His innovations in science lead to many developments of modern science. Leonardo was able to express on paper what he saw in his head and the world around him. Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452 in the town of Vinci, near Florence. Leonardo was an exceptional boy for his time. Leonardo was introduced to Andre del Verrocchio, an Italian painter and sculptor. Leonardo was Verrocchio's assistant. In Verrocchio's, Baptism of Christ, Leonardo painted the kneeling angel in the left corner. Also, while working for Verrocchio. da Vinci created a portrait of Ginevra Benci and the Madonna with a Carnation. He worked on engineering projects and a figure for a monument to Gian Giacomo Trivilzio, which Leonardo never finished. The Last Supper was a mural in the refectory of the Monastery of Santa Maria dell Grazie. While living in Milan, Italy, Leonardo created one of his masterpieces, The Last Supper. Leonardo used two techniques, sfumato and chiaroscuro, while creating the Mona Lisa. He experimented into his works of nature with the stratification of rocks, flow of water, growth of plants, and the action of light. Many of his creations were left unfinished and the world will never know what they were intended to be. Sfumato is especially seen in the robe and in he smile of Mona Lisa. Leonardo is known for his landscaping backgrounds. Leonardo da Vinci died on May 2, 1519. The Mona Lisa, was known for its technical innovations and its mysteriousness as the smiling subject. Christ is isolated in the center of the three groups. The Mona Lisa, took Leonardo three years to create, but those three years made the Mona Lisa one of his most celebrated portraits ever painted. He had contributions in the areas of art, science, and humanity. There have been many attempts to restore his mural, but they had to reverse some of the damage. Leonardo spent his last years between Milan and Florence visiting his half brothers and sisters.
