Metamorphosis

             In the novel, "Metamorphosis", by Franz Kafka, The sister of the main character (Grete) has matured drastically throughout the novel. She has changed from the time that her brother (Gregor) transformed into a vermin. By her brother going through this transformation, she matures from the average 17-year-old teenager, to a responsible, young woman. These changes occur through the process of time.
            
             Early in the novel, Grete discovers that her brother (Gregor) has transformed into a vermin. At first she, and her mother and father were skeptical about the entire situation. Actually, none of them believe it until they finally realize that this vermin, is a part of their family. Acceptance is the one thing that distinguishes Grete from her parents. She is the only one who even offers to feed her brother after the transformation. The mother is weak and is unable to mentally grasp the fact that her son has been transformed and the very sight of him, makes her even more sick. The father is retired and is trapped in his own mind. He is trapped within his thoughts, because he has to accept the fact that Gregor is the only one working and is backbone of the household and not himself. So the mother and father's negative energy gets negatively reflected upon Gregor. Despite the feelings of her parents, Grete still checks on her brother and tries to continue caring for him. Even though she doesn't know it, but she is slowly maturing by actually caring for her brother when he is in need. She has the unconditional love for her brother that forces her to mature whether she notices it or not. Another thing that makes her bond with her brother is her music. She loves to play the violin, which makes her feel at her best. Gregor also loves it when his sister plays, but their parents feel that playing the violin is not as important as other things.
