Uniforms in Public Schools
Throughout the years, fashion has become essential to people's feelings about themselves and the appearances they give to others. From the different styles throughout the decades, people have discovered and expressed their feelings by what kind of clothes they wear. In the fifties, people wore poodle skirts and danced the night away. In the seventies, the flower children painted themselves, were bellbottoms and leisure suits, and listened to rebellious music. Spandex, bright florescent suits, big hair, and exercise videos ruled the eighties. Now, once again, fashions have changed. People wear named brand clothing like Abercrombie, American Eagle, and The GAP. These types of clothes and fashions are not always appropriate when school is involved. Uniforms have a lot of important benefits. Uniforms can instill character in students and bring a sense of belonging to the school. Uniforms would do away with bullying and making fun of people for not being as privileged as others. Social barriers would collapse and the student body would unite. Stealing other people's clothes would also decrease if public schools adopted a uniform policy. Uniforms in big city schools would stop people from getting beaten up over what style of clothing they were wearing. Fighting also ties in with this topic. Academic performance of students would improve if public schools adopted a uniform policy. Being accepted by others cuts down on the stereotypes of what groups have more money than others. A uniform policy would help all high schools develop to be a better place to learn, socialize, and develop character. Pride builds a sense of belonging to a greater community and encourages students to become actively involved in school programs. Uniforms would be a great addition to any public school system. Personal characteristics of the student body are important to how successful the school is going to be in teaching the students. If the students improve their studying habits, then naturally, their test scores will improve because the focus will be on school work instead of fashion. Having a uniform policy can bring the school closer together preventing a lot of social segregation and fighting among different groups of people.
