The Changes of Salem

A long trail of ups and downs forced Arthur Miller's characters of The Crucible to show their true sides. The structure of many of the characters changed throughout the play and was often very complex. Some were seemed to be stubborn and arrogance and then changed for the good and others were looked at as good and then changed for the worse. John Proctor and Reverend John Hale are characters in the play that have very complex and dynamic roles. With each act in the play their characters changed and eventually evolved into totally different people by the end of the play. Hale has one of the biggest transformations in the play then any other character. Reverend Hale is the man who is called to help the town with its problems but by the end only forces them to proceed. Though Proctor tells the truth it did not help him, it instead led to 2his arrest and conviction as a witch. Proctor becomes a humble man, in ACT IV his wife says "he have his goodness now. But since Proctor had such a strong desire for his name and reputation he does not want to ruin his good name. He is offered the opportunity to make a public confession, at the beginning he is hesitant but by the end of the play he is more concerned with his personal morals than his public reputation. he crazy rampage the town is going through if he confesses to his adultery.
