James Russell Lowell stated, "Education is an ornament in prosperity, and a refuge in adversity." (Hurtford, 55)Lowell indicates that education is where there is success, and a safe haven where this is hardship. Educators once thought that dyslexic children could not succeed or have an education that would lead them to prosperity. The educators began to seek ways to help the situation. Now-a-day, teaching methods and appliances have dramatically improved life for dyslexic children.Over time there have been many different types of meanings for dyslexia. Dr. Samuel Torrey Orton defined dyslexia as a "cross lateralization of the brain." (Davis 8) This meant that the left side of the brain was doing what the right side of the brain was supposed to do, and the right side doing the job of the left side. Today this is not the proper definition of dyslexia. Researchers have concluded that "dyslexia is a lack of coordination between sight and sound. It is a generalized disturbance of language function that interferes with the acquisition of reading skills." Today's research has not come to an end on way to help dyslexic children, but has just begun. "A child who spells a word must remember what the word looks like and remember the correct order of letters. "Reading is getting the thought the printed sentences were meant to convey. Teaching methods are a process of comprehending strategies that allow the child to understand and remember what he has been taught. As a result, many experts urge all children to learn how to use a calculator. Each sound is seen, heard, spoken, and practiced within blocks of words. Calculators help dyslexics because it allows them to keep up with the curriculum and to focus their mental energy on problem-solving strategies. Games are tools that can be used to increase a child's spelling and vocabulary skills. Teaching methods, such as tutoring and games to appliances such as computer software and watches have been remarkable to these children's lives. It is processed into the brain by using as many senses as possible at time to make learning easier. One student stated, "They make such a huge difference. The software is broken down into levels that increase as the child improves his knowledge. However, this may not be the same to every dyslexic child. Puzzles develop skills in separating each letter for a better view of the word. Dyslexics have difficulty recalling words since their brain does not react quick enough to take in what is being said.
