Alphaville
Words are very powerful things. Through words, we both attempt describe and are helpless but to endlessly filter our world. They are able to inspire love and loyalty as easily they are as unrest and revolution. Without them, we would be mute as animals, hopelessly cognizant but completely incapable of self-expression. Words are man's attempt to communicate the individual's experience, and through words, we are in a constant and changing battle to reach the essence of the human experience. The people of Alphaville are as dependent upon words as a means of self-expression as the rest of the world, if not more so. Through the elimination of all "illogical" art, language becomes the only mode of communication; they have no paintings or other visual art from which the individual can draw a subjective and original opinion as to the intention of the artist. All logical medium of communication available to the Alphaville popul
The power of the "Bible", through which they are forced to define all they know, see, and experience in the world, is second only to the power of those who write it. These authors can eliminate words whose meanings are arbitrary and open to individual interpretation, such as poetic phrases and loose adjectives. ) The remaining words are clear and innate to their absolute meanings; they cannot be twisted into any worm of illogical creativity. The Alphavillians invest as much blind faith in the legitimacy of this dictionary as any devout follower of, say, Christianity, but because they have never been exposed to any other text or interpretation of their "Bible", both their ability and their possible desire to critique or discard the information given to them is completely negated. Language, being their only means of explanation and communication, is surrendered almost unfathomable control. Regardless of whether or not that Bible is the "Word of God", the actual men who wrote the ancient text probably had no idea of its profound effect on future humankind. One key difference is the fact that questionable authors, all of whom are dead, composed the Christian bible. As Natasha states when she reads the word "conscience" from a forbidden book, "Je ne comprend pas. Through language, we perceive, filter, and project our world. In Alphaville, we realize that the authors of the "Bible" aren't just recording the Word of God; they are composing the word of God, and who can speak the word of God but God, himself? Through their absolute power over language, these authors control the world. There is no greater power than the power of language.
