The Bluest Eye- Difficulties within the Marriage
Have you ever known anyone with marriage problems? Ifm sure you at least once or twice you have witnessed an argument, maybe even a separation or divorce. The main idea here is that this is all very normal. No marriage is at all easy, and it tends to come packaged with many disagreements and hardships. In the novel The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison uses the marriage between Pauline and Cholly to symbolize the difficulties a marriage can bring to life. Cholly is a drunk, abusive husband who turns violent almost every time he comes home. Pauline seems to be stuck in the past with her happy love thoughts about when she and Cholly first met. Throughout the book we get a close look at the relationship between Cholly and Pauline and all the difficulties that come with it. It raises some interesting questions as to why they are still together. Throughout the novel, Morrison seems to be saying that while being in a marriage, a person should take the good with the bad and realize things change with time. No two people are exactly the same and that right there is enough to cause differences in opinions and attitudes. It was very similar for my mom and step-dad, Todd. Sometimes things wasnft all badh (129). She thinks about how her life used to be and wonders why it canft still be that way. Although Pauline and Cholly never really worked through it all, Pauline was a loyal wife to Cholly where she stays with him through thick and thin. I witnessed many loud, painful fights as well as a separation. Thatfs a lot for someone to carry over his or her shoulders. Things seemed to be perfect at first, and then it all went down hill. The happy memories of the past cause some pain to her in the way of which she knows that she will probably never have that back. The relationship is new and exciting, and it seems as though the two of them will be perfect for each other. Seeing how this is the way he is for the majority of his time spent at home, it has to be a very difficult life for Pauline. I feel that Morrison portrays the idea of never giving up, even when the going gets tough. But I say, I donft recollect it much anymoreh (131). Nobody deserves to live with the physical and mental anguish that this relationship brings. She doesnft see that much anymore, and although she misses it, she recognizes that this is her life.
