             Should Gay/Lesbian Headed households be allowed to adopt children?
             It is my firm belief that Gay and Lesbian couples should be allowed to adopt children and should be considered just as any other couple would. There are about 5000 children waiting to be adopted in the UK alone. There are also a shocking 50,000 children in institutional care. To deny children of loving homes simply because both parents are of the same sex is unfair to both the proposed parents and the children. The BAAF (British Association for Adoption and Fostering) chief executive Felicity Collier said: "It would be a massive step backwards if the House of Lords now votes to prevent unmarried couples, including same sex couples, from adopting a child." Lord Waheed Alli who is an openly gay peer, has told colleagues "he feels that other peers believe he doesn't belong." he said he can agree that "Married couples should have priority over unmarried couples and gay couples, but what I cannot agree is that a child in institutional care is better off there than in a loving caring home." There are many homophobic individuals in today's society who are the main cause of negative stereotypes against lesbians and gay parents, I believe that Lord Alli 's comment that "he feels that other peers believe he doesn't belong," tells us that unfortunately people like these can end up as peers. In 1970 about 20,300 children were adopted, by 1999 this figure dropped to between 4000 and 6000. If Gay and Lesbian couples were allowed to adopt then more children would have homes, but more importantly more children would have families. Gays and lesbians are human too and who is to say that they don't deserve equal rights in society. Society has to realize that the modern family has developed into many different forms in recent years in that the "nuclear family" is not necessarily the most common form anymore.
