Hurricane Charlie
Many people left without water, electric, food, homes, jobs, and even loved ones. Hurricane Charley came through and left the state of Florida in shambles, to say the least. Millions of people lost power for days; some people lost everything that they owned. This storm is considered to be the worst Florida has seen in about twelve years, and is considered by many to be worse than Hurricane Andrew. The state of Florida is considered to be a Federal Disaster Area, and is getting help from FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). Now I'm going to give you a little bit of insight to let you know just how bad the storm has affected the economy of the State of Florida and even how it has affected the economy of the United States. Now when you think of Florida, you think of Mickey Mouse don't you? Well most people did, but aren't to keen on the idea of coming to a hurricane zone. The past month has dealt a hard hit to the tourism aspect of Florida. Usually the tourism industry would be booming right now in late August early September, but not this year. But places like Disney World, Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, Wet & Wild, etc. are actually losing money this month with all the damages that th
Was your work place open when the storm came through? I work at Hammock Dunes Private Golf Club and they were closed for four days after Charley came. Now on to the United States as a whole and how Charley hurt us there. Publix, Winn-Dixie, Food-Lion, etc. These were two major hits that the state took, but wait there's more. Hurricanes Charley and Francis teamed up to force FPL (Florida Power and Light) to use about fifty percent of its Three-Hundred-Forty-Five million dollar emergency storm fund in under three weeks. Charley actually caused about one-hundred-fifty million dollars in damages due to uprooting citrus trees and knocking down the fruit on the one's standing. It also damaged more then 50 mobile park homes throughout the state leaving thousands of elderly people homeless. Florida is the second largest producer of oranges in the whole entire world (after Brazil). Charlie Bronson, the Florida Agriculture Commissioner, think that this could be the worst loss in fresh fruit that Florida has ever seen. Again, Florida is losing more money that it absolutely relies on to bring in great money. Hurricane Charley has wiped out easily about one-third of the states orange groves. People's jobs were gone because building blew away in tornados and the intense winds. So now the unemployment rate is up to. I easily lost about four-hundred dollars that I needed to pay bills and living expenses.
