Corruption in Denmark
In William Shakespeare's Hamlet, great corruption is plaguing the country of Denmark. This corruption causes great tragedy to occur. Death and suffering are the punishment to these corrupt people. In Hamlet, corruption is seen in nearly every facet of this play: the moral, the political, the mental, and the spiritual aspects. The first area of corruption in Hamlet is the moral aspect of the play. Under the rule of Hamlet's father, the country of Denmark had no bad reptuation. King Hamlet was a just and noble ruler with the country's best interests in mind. When Claudius becomes king the country's interests are not a main concern to him. He would much rather drink and party than actually lead his country. By encouraging these acts the country starts to follow his lead. Soon after he becomes the king the country of Denmark gets the re
This is because if Claudius were to ask for forgiveness he would lose all his possessions. After praying this meaningless prayer Claudius rises and says, "Words without thoughts never to heaven go"(3. He prays to God because he feels so terribly about what he has done. He would rather receive eternal damnation than give up his kingdom and riches. This proves that Claudius is the epitome of greediness. Because of these aspects of corruption most of the characters are killed. He has killed a man and feels the remorse that comes with doing such a deed. Another area of corruption that is seen in the play is the political corruption. When Claudius takes control and transforms the country of Denmark into a country filled with drunkards, this causes the people of the country to lose all respect for the royal family. The theme of corruption is echoed throughout Hamlet. Ophelia says " I would give you some violets, but they withered all when my father died. Ophelia passes out weeds, believing they are flowers, and tells the recipient what each flower means. Ophelia, in her insanity, kills herself by accidentally drowning in a stream when trying to get a flower.
