Bring it On - Cheerleading vs. Sports

Despite what the many critics believe, mainly football players and other athletes, cheerleading is a sport that requires hard work and dedication. Cheerleaders, just like participants in every other sport, attend camps, practice multiple times, risk injury, and face competition. It is time for cheerleaders to get the respect and recognition they deserve, instead of the stereotyping and ridicule they receive. During those last weeks of summer when all the sports teams are off at camp, one might assume that cheerleaders are just working on their tan. However, this could not be further from the truth. It is estimated that at least a half-million cheerleaders participate in cheerleading camps each summer (Brady, USA Today). Both football players and cheerleaders suffer through days of grueling practices during the off season, therefore both should receive praise. One comment that cheerleaders hear often is, "Cheerleading isn't a sport, you can't get hurt". However, cheerleading is just as dangerous as football. With cheerleaders doing stunts, executing complicated jumps, tumbling, and throwing people in the air, injury is expected. In fact, many injuries can stem from c

Does the athlete need to risk injury? Being held twenty feet or more in the air is just as dangerous as having a ninety mile per hour baseball hit you. The squad for each team is competing against one another to be louder, look better, motivate the crowd, and perform more complex stunts; basically, each squad wants to show up their rivals. Both put in extra time to get ready for an important event, both should be considered a sport. What criterion is used to determine what a sport is anyway? Does there need to be a ball? Well, wrestling is a sport and there is no ball involved. There will always be critics to bring down the sport of cheerleading, but cheerleading does require hard work and the athletes that participate need to be dedicated to survive the arduous practices, dangerous moves, and demanding competition. To say that cheerleading is not risky, and therefore is not a sport, shows a lack of knowledge and research on the subject. Football players have their scrimmages, games, and play offs. Is physical contact needed with another player? However, in tennis the opponents are separated by a net. Football players attend practices after school and on some weekends to prepare for a big game. Additionally, just like football players learn cooperation and have to work together on the field if they want to win, cheerleaders have to learn unity. One fact that should be noted, is that Cheerleading is not sponsored by NCAA, which limits a team to a 20 hour per week schedule (Brady). 0 GPA are given $1,500 per year (Brady, USA Today). Each squad struggles to be creative, and innovative with their moves; they strive for perfection and to stun the judges.
