The Significane of the Minor Characters in Macbeth
The minor characters in Macbeth are important to the overall plot of the play. They help develop and create the situations that occur in the play. Ross starts his messenger role early in the play. He tells King Duncan that the thane of Cawdor has betrayed him and fought on the kerns and gallowglasses side. Ross says "assisted by the most disloyal traitor, the thane of Cawdor, began a dismal conflict"(I,II,52) This causes King Duncan to denounce the thane of Cawdor and kill him and name Macbeth the new thane of Cawdor by saying "go pronounce his present death and with his former tittle greet Macbeth."(I,II,64) Ross is the only person in this play who doesn't tell a lie. Ross doesn't only deliver messages though; he also gave Macbeth the clothing needed for the thane of Cawdor. Angus says "we are sent to give thee form our royal master Thanks; only to herald thee into his sight, not pay thee."(I,III,100) Also Ross seems to know about everything that is going on in the play. He might be a professional message deliverer. Everybody can believe what comes out of Roses mouth. For example, when Ross told Lady Macduff that Macduff left to England, she didn't start asking other people to make sure he left. The next thing she asked was "
The witches know what Macbeth will and would do to become king and keep his throne. If it's a friend of his he shows some kind of compassion to his friend when he tells them. "(V,VII,47) These are strong words from the Siward and he is proud of his son. The first witches apparition said "Macbeth! Macbeth! ,Macbeth! Beware of Macduff: beware of the thane of fife. "(I,II,36) This means that she wants her female weaknesses to be taken away, and she wants to have manly strengths. It is a different situation though when Ross lets Macduff know his wife and son are dead. They made him over-confident and think that nobody could kill him. This is what gets the guests to stay and not think that Macbeth is crazy. When Macduff asks the two questions, " how does my wife, and all my children?" (IV,III,17 and 18) Ross says they are well, but they are dead. Then the witches cast a spell on Macbeth to destroy him. Lady Macbeth is stronger mentally than Macbeth, and is smarter when it comes to covering up things. The witches knew what he would do to become king. Great Birnam wood to high Duninane hill shall come against him". She says, "art thou afread to be in thine own act and valor as thou art in desire? Wouldst thou have that which thou esteem'st the ornament of life, and live a Coward in thine own esteem letting "I dare not" wait upon "I would,"like the poor cat I' the adage?"(I,VII,40) She is saying that this will prove if you love me or not. It makes lady Macbeth think of ways to become queen faster.
