To Kill a Mockingbird

In the beginning, when she is describing the town, she says “Ladies bathed after their three o’ clock naps and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum,” (5). It’s as if the whole story is a flashback. As the book progresses, though, and they gain new understanding of the way things are, they become less childish and more capable of understanding complicated situations. Her narration in the book does not change, but stays as sophisticated as ever. In one part of the story, she says “Anybody who went up to the house once oughta not to still run every time he passes it,” (23) This shows how much scout had changed since the time of the story. She tied back to statements at the beginning to give a good moral by using symbolism. Boo Radley was kind of a mysterious character, as the townspeople didn’t know much about him. This is nothing like the often-crude statements of the young Scout. This sparked the children’s imaginations and there was mild persecution, although unknown to the children. Her command of the use of symbolism and skill in developing of the characters created a very strong book. Even thought everyone knew he was innocent, the jury found him guilty only because he was black. Scout also changed slowly throughout the book. The reader is able to tell through her use of dialogue.
