Handgun Control

As an American citizen, you are automatically entitled to own and carry a gun, thanks to the second amendment of the constitution, which states "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." This amendment was a dominant force in the development of the United States and has strong roots in the American public and their view on life. The rights to bear arms, specifically handguns has become a very hot topic as of late and has many people crying foul, as the thought of banning or even controlling firearms with the use of gun control, gives people the impression that their constitutional rights are being taken away. Those in favor of gun control cite numerous accidental deaths and violent crimes in their plight to impose restrictions on those who carry, and whish to carry concealed handguns. On the other side of the spectrum are those who whish to preserve the second amendment and continue with their right to bear arms and protect themselves from crime by means of their own. Many vocal leaders have emerged on both sides, some with credibility, some with nothing more than a name, but regardless of

In today's world, protection and safety is a must, and to ban the use of handguns only puts honest law-abiding citizens at a disadvantage to the criminals who already possess guns, and will always have access to handguns and other weapons. Guns, more precisely handguns are a fine example of having tools for being prepared in a situation. The argument made by many of the doctors was that guns were like the germs that caused the disease of violence. If you are prepared for a situation, and have the necessary tools to deal with the situation, you will be fine. This is especially true for women who are the targets of most violent crime, because with a seed of doubt in the attackers mind, they will be much more hesitant about trying to approach their victim. Just because they are doctors does not mean that they are qualified to speak on the subject of gun control, and as Thompson points out, they might even have a greater bias, as they see the results of gun shots. But today the occurrence of violent crime such as rape and murder is frighteningly high, and an oft-blamed reason for this is the ease in which handguns are obtained and used by criminals in their activities. This is why Desuka feels that handguns are nothing but a thorn in societies side, because their only real use is to inflict harm on others, and must be outlawed from our society in order to try and eliminate the violent criminal element. The message Desuka sends here is that why take a risk and be prepared for something that might not happen, when the situation could just be turned around on you. whom you ask, the question of gun control will raise a passionate argument either for or against the restrictions on firearms, more specifically handguns. Desuka admits that even if handguns were taken away, such acts as rape would still occur, because a knife is a sufficient enough weapon to be used in the attack, but it is obvious that if a gun were in the hands of the woman being attacked, the expression "bringing a knife a to a gun fight" would be a perfect fit. If handguns were outlawed the only difference between what we have now, is that an even larger black market for weapons would grow. Because of this, there would be no real drop in violent crimes with guns, as those who commit these crimes would already posses the guns, making it nothing more than a little bit harder to obtain a gun. Also the push for gun control came in such a strong wave from the government and the media after the assassinations of the Kennedy's and the attempted assassination of Reagan, that all of the sudden anyone with data that supported the control of guns was given grant money and a chance for fame, and this lead to many doctors sacrificing their integrity. People argue that if concealed weapons are legal, it will result in a higher number of accidental fatalities, but in 1993, only 30 innocent people were killed by civilians, a number so low, that the protection provided by carry a concealed weapons greatly out numbers the unfortunate, but extremely rare accidents involving deaths.
