Teen Pregnancy
Preventing teenagers from having unplanned pregnancies is an important goal that has been pursed since the 1970's, When births to teenagers were first diagnosed as a major social problem. For many years reproductive policy in the United States concentrated almost singly on women. But we all know it's take two to make a baby. So we need to look at the male's involvement in teenage pregnancy. According to the National center for Health Statistics (NCHS) in 1987 teenagers in the U.S. aged 14 or less accounted for a total of 28,070 pregnancies. These statistics continuously alternate. By 1997 the number of pregnancies for 14 year olds or less went down to 22,690. The (NCHS) also indicates that the number of pregnancies for 15-17 year olds in the U.S. had a total of 384,340 pregnancies in 1987 and 323,930 in 1996. Even through the pregnancy rate for teenagers in the U.S. are declining the United States still has the highest teenage pregnancy rate of all the developed countries (NCHS). About 1 million teenagers become pregnant each year 95% of those pregnancies are unattended and one third of them end in abortion. We need to ask the question why males were even excluded from the way we think about pregnancy pr
It seems unfair for these children to suffer for the mistakes of their parents. With little family support I was very depressed and tired I had to work come home and be a mother. I had to deal with the stress m child was going through. " Children who live in single parent homes, especially Hispanics and blacks, live below the poverty level (Hinckley, 1998). Just under 10 percent of Black and Hispanic males report a birth as compared to 5 percent White males. The child support Enforcement program was established in 1975 as a way of recovering from the father some of the public funds that the AFDC (Aid to families with dependent children) was receiving. Sex education is being taught in many schools and clinics everyday. With close to little money I was forced to get aid from government programs such as Welfare, W. Teen pregnancy is definitely a controversial issue because it affects society as a whole. I believe this lack of communication within the family is the main cause of pregnancies. The older a male virgin the more likely he is to become sexually active in the next year. My child father was older but he led an irresponsible lifestyle. When I first started going out with my babies father I started to have feelings that I never experienced before. Six percent of male's ages 15-19 has fathered a child. We argue that if males were going to be held responsible for any children they produce, it is time to spend more public resources on helping them to avoid unintended pregnancies (Sonenstein and Pleck 1995).
