Manifest Destiny
Between the years of 1840 and 1890 America expanded westward. During the expansion, America took up the ideas of the "Manifest Destiny". America expanded towards the west where there were many positive and negative factors that played a role in this progress. Another big factor was Americas Natural Environment. The Manifest Destiny was a belief that America was destined to expand its boundaries to the Pacific Ocean. Document H shows the theories behind the Manifest Destiny were indeed true. It shows how many lives were affected once the settlers moved west. The Native Americans had a big change in their lifestyle as the people moved. Many of the settlers tried to force their religion and way of living on the Native Americans, something completely different from what they had been used to. It was very hard for the Native Americans to go about their way and be free like they wanted be
Levi savage in another case was one to try and prevent the people to move. Document G shows this exact thing happening. Document E shows almost the same thing. Documents C and e both show that although there was a great struggle there was still a chance and this gave many people hope, so like the others they traveled westward instead of staying behind. Document A shows many good benefits west of the Mississippi river. West of the Mississippi were a lot of grasslands that would make it very easy to travel, and farm, etc. Many People moved to the west, although there were many obstacles that could've prevented them from traveling such as; very steep mountains, which would be hard to travel over, and also cold weather. There were many things that helped to the decision of expanding westwards, and there were also others that didn't help as much. Through all of these difficulties the people still traveled to get to their destination. Document C shows that religion also played a big part in the moving westward. This law played a very big role in bringing many settelers to the west. Many people didn't feel that there was any reason to stay back, and so they disagreed with him and went anyway. The people were very anxious to move so they did. He felt that is wasn't a good idea, and in Document C said this: " we could not cross the mountains with a mixed age of people, women, and little children, so late in the season without much suffering, sickness, and death". The Homestead Act allowed the settlers to acquire up to 160 acres of Public land, as long as they had resided in that area for at least five years.
