Macleans University Ranking Analysis

The Canadian magazine Macleans has for several years published an annual ranking of Canadian universities based on the undergraduate experience they offer. Macleans means to provide perspective university students with an idea of what is available to them. What most of these potential students fail to understand and question is how to ascertain the validity of the study. It is taken for granted that the study is reliable and valid based solely on the reputation of Macleans magazine. The study fails to address how the data was collected and to provide information on the sources used. This begs to question the reliability and validity of the study.

The ranking of a university was based on how well it placed according to about twenty measures. To start off with, the universities were divided into three categories: primarily undergraduate, comprehensive, and medical doctoral. This division is to group together universities with similar structures and mandates, so as to not give one an edge over another. Within these categories the universities are evaluated based on student body, classes, faculty, finances, library and reputation. Within these sub-categories there are further breakdowns of evaluation.

. . .
The study is the most in-depth study of Canadian universities. The study chose to omit other aspects of the undergraduate experience.

The information presented in the study puts forth some questions on the reliability and the validity of the study. The questions are brought to light by the shortage of information on the sources used to collect the data, and how the data was collected. The validity of the research in this article is based on the data collection method.

Reliability in research means the dependability or consistency of the measure of a variable .

Validity in research means the truth of the measurement and the proper use of procedures .

An aspect of validity is the quality of measurement. Using the data gathered, Macleans publishes an article whose intended is to act as a guide for potential university students. As stated earlier, the method is unknown. This does not allow us to know if the questions were biased, and the rate of response. The study did not publish the survey questions that they used. 0 Statistical Analysis

Research is always subject to critical analysis.
