It's two in the morning and you are fast asleep after a long day of work. While you lie in bed your car in front of your house, in the parking lot, or parked down the street or even in your drive way has just turned on. It's not the tooth fairy behind the wheel, but some person fueled by a number of reasons. Five hours later when walk out to your car you slip into frenzy. You know you left your car there in that vacant spot, but you aren't sure. You ask yourself maybe I left it down the street or around the corner. Many explanations race thru your mind. Finally you come to reality it's gone and so is the thief. So now your day is delayed and the police tell you many stolen cars are not recovered. Unfortunately many people do not realize that someday that could be them. People are not aware of the issues that are associated with the theft of Acura Integras and Honda Civics in the Washington DC metro area.
Unfortunately the two vehicles are stolen in the Washington metro area frequently and the frequency is rising. Movies such as Gone in 60 seconds depicted Car thieves' knowledge and choice of cars. For many local viewers who accepted the film as reality would be shocked to know the whole story. In the film the cars targeted are
. . .
These cars are being appreciated for their exterior and interior styling as well as their engines. For instance in Alexandria the police department has been equipped with tarp cars. The lock is very weak and can be broken of completely with a screwdriver. One reason for the sudden increase is the emergence of street racers. While the law enforcement community's lack of funding have given an opening for the thieves to continue to operate. Air bags and body parts are sold to body shops that want to increase profits according to the ___quote________. Without the chip even a copied key will not turn on the car. Instead cars such as Acura Integra and Honda Civic are being stolen everyday. The key is no inserted into any key lock but instead is a keyless entry device and has an electronic starting signal that is encoded into the key. Unfortunately budget cuts in Maryland forced the state to cut back funding to help decrease car thefts in 2001. Another step being taken in the metro area is a program where cars are registered with police and given a decal.
Here in the metro area the law is taking steps to decrease car thefts, but budget cuts have set them back. One benefit to the thieves is that the Integra and the Civic have mechanical parts that are interchangeable. The cars are being stolen for parts that can be removed easily and than sold to different people. Other parts such as suspension components, brake components, exhaust headers, exhaust lines, air intakes, HID lighting, after market radios, factory alloyed wheels, after market wheels and leather interiors all can be taken from the stolen car and installed into other Integra and Civics.
