Edgar Allan Poe was a great writer who was born in Boston, January 19, 1809. He died on October 7, 1849. He was a writer known for his poems and short stories. He was the son of David Poe Jr. and Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins. Both of Poe's parents were members of the Boston Theatre. His father had served as Deputy Quartermaster General of Baltimore during the Revolution. Edgar Poe's parents separated, and upon the death of his mother Elizabeth in 1811 in Richmond, he was taken in by Mr. John Allan and Mrs. Frances Allan, and was known as Edgar Allan. Edgar Allan Poe studied in England for five years. In 1826 he entered the University of Virginia , but was forced to leave due to debt.

This poem is about the lost of his wife Virginia. It seemed that all the women he loved ended up dying, and they all died from the same disease: Tuberculosis. He then says “…in this kingdom by the sea…”, the same place where Annabel Lee died, he points out that there is the meeting of life and death. In 1833 Poe won a short-story contest offered by the Baltimore Saturday Visiter with a story called "The Manuscript Found in a Bottle", which led to a short-lived position as editor of the Southern Literary Mesenger in 1835. after that he published his second collection of poetry Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems.
An example of his lifestyles influencing his work is in the poem Annabel Lee in which was addressed for the loss of his wife Virginia Clemm. To add to his hard luck, he was poor, didn’t have a stable job, and was a alcoholic. Many people considered him a pessimist or someone who looks at the bad side of things instead of the good side. As Poe starts the poem he talks about his wife and him and how they came to love each other. In his last stanza, “…For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams,” he is saying that the moon beaming reminds him of Annabel Lee, comparing her to the prettiest part of the night.
Throughout Edgar’s Allan Poe career many things about his life had an influence on his writing. The theme of the story is life is not fair so don’t take it for granted. He entered West Point in 1830, when he published his third collection of poetry Poems.
