Henry's assignment was to take four men with three cars loaded with hospital equipment. Catherine was already pregnant Back at the front it was not long, before retreat began. They get there safely and stay in the mountain for awhile until Catherine was near her delivery date. He finds Catherine and spends time together. Here he jumped into the river and deserted the army. He ordered them to halt, but they ignored him so he shot one of them and Bonello finished him off. Amyo was shot and Bonello surrendered. When Aymo's car had gotten stuck in the soft earth, Henry ordered the two sergeants to cut brush, but all they said was that they had to go. The two became even closer and pretended that they were married. Catherine stays in labor for a long time the baby would not breathe when it was born. Henry decided that it would be quicker if they took a detour, so they separated from the rest. Piani and Henry made it back to the retreat, but Henry was taken out to be questioned by the carabinieri. To add to Henry's misfortune Catherine dies from hemorrhage.
