John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on January 3, 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa and was the older of Arthur Reuel and Mabel Suffield Tolkien’s two sons. His father’s side of the family migrated from Saxony in the 18th century but over the century and a half before his birth they had become thoroughly Anglicized. In 1919 he received his MA after working on it for two years as an assistant on the Oxford English Dictionary. He now lies beside his wife Edith just north of Oxford (Doughan). There were always people trying to visit him at his house or reporters and photographers trying to get a picture (Doughan). Ronald eventually became one of the primary reasons for CS Lewis’ return to Christianity (Doughan). This was when he finally created his highest form of Elvish, which is called Qenya (Doughan).
