Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born to the talented musician Leopald Mozart on January 27th, 1756 in Salzburg, Austria. He demonstrated a rich talent early in his life, practicing the harpsichord at the age of three. His older sister is quoted saying that the young Mozart "often spent much time at the clavier, picking out thirds, which he was always striking, and his pleasure showed that it sounded good."1 This suggests an innate talent, which was then cultivated by Mozart’s musical family and turned into a masterpiece. However, Mozart later claims; "People make a mistake who think that my art has come easily to me. Nobody has devoted so much time and thought to composition as I. There is not a famous master whose music I have not studied over and over. "2

Mozart’s early talent did not stop at practicing, although it only took him thirty minutes to master his first composition, 3 days before his fifth birthday. Shortly thereafter Mozart composed his first work, Andante in C minor. Leopald realized that both he and his sister demonstrated a great deal of musical talent. He devised a plan to not only cultivate his children’s talents more, but profit off of their forte. Very shortly, they began visiting the courts of Europe.

Mozart, now independent and free of all the reigns that used to dominate his life, began his mature life. He stood as a great influence to Mozart, and his sway is seen in Mozarts symphonies K. Mozart gave his first public concert and had rave reviews. He was buried in an unmarked grave, as was custom at this time in Vienna. He wrote in his journal; “If people could see into my heart, I should almost feel ashamed. To me everything is cold—cold as ice. 5

Following the trip to Paris, the Mozart’s moved on to London where they remained for a year and a half. Mozart spent the next two years at home, composing new works.
