V.S. Naipaul
In the work by V.S. Naipaul, "Becoming a Writer," which is an excerpt from his work, "Prologue to an Autobiography, 'Finding the Center'," Naipaul tells his background and how he struggled, as a writer, to come to terms with who he was as a writer and a person. It is evident how as he ages and gains experience, he gains wisdom and peace. Another writer, Jorge Luis Borges, also wrote a work which sheds light on how he has gained peace and hope, and something can be learned from analyzing how the blindness he received at age 56 affected his attitude and development. I'll discuss some of the points that they make in their works and compare these two works and writers. V.S. Naipaul said that he always wanted to be a writer, and he was fortunate enough to land the opportunity to go to Oxford and get a start on his training in what it meant to be a writer. He was always intimidated by the title of "writer," because it made him get anxious about potentials he should be living up to. This is evident from the first paragraph on page 2692. Here, it say
When he went blind, his thoughts had to be based on the images he had already seen and those images took on deeper meaning. s that he was even hesitant to put his name on his work, because of his anxiety and ambition. It makes me think about how my association with these things has a part in forming my identity, but the thing to learn is that, to be at peace, people need to recognize that their identity is always changing, but be careful not to let their identity become lost in the world. Back in Naipaul's autobiography, he wrote about this when he said that "any attempt at narrative can give value to experience which might otherwise evaporate away" (2692). Either a work that I have produced or something I own. By doing this, writing becomes very difficult, because it doesn't allow freedom of expression and it hinders the ability to analyze past experiences. To Borges, writing is more of an expression like a dream, that does not assume to know the cause and effect of things. " For example, to learn from experiences, people need to stop and focus on the events of the past. Jorge Luis Borges's poem backs this up by telling how it is in the simplification such as "when night abstracts and simplifies all visible things. He thought of writing as a "kind of display" (2692). Often times this requires shutting the eyes to the distractions around you and focusing in on something. Naipaul realized that writing was a way of learning in it's self.
