A Separate Peace

The names of the three main characters in this novel are Gene, Phineas(Finny), and Edwin Lepellier(Leper).Gene is the Narrator of the novel who tells of his experiences at Devon when he was sixteen and seventeen years old. He is a close friend to Finny. Finny is the roommate and a close friend to Gene. He is considered to be the best athlete in Devon. He is also known as the boy who never makes a mistake. Leper is the person who is always made fun of by his classmates. He is important in the novel since he was present when Finny "fell" from the oak tree.
The novel begins with Gene revisiting Devon several years after graduating to reflect on the incidents that occurred during the summer session. Later in the novel, Finny creates the super Suicide Society of the summer session and places Gene and himself as the leaders. During the jump, Gene jounces the limb and Finny reaches out to him for help, yet Gene allows him to fall, causing him to break his leg. Gene begins to feel guilty for his actions and realizes his own jealousy of Finny. Finny refuses to acknowledge the fact that Gene pushed him out of the tree, because it conflicts with his idea of everybody being good. At the end of the novel Finny begins to realize the truth after being questioned by Brinker. After he was questioned he attempts to run away and trips and falls the stairs and breaks his leg once again. During the operation, some of the bone marrow enters his bloodstream and he dies.
