October Sky

Homer Hickam Jr., Sonny, was born in Coalwood, West Virginia. I n his book, October Sky” he relates his own life story, focusing on his teenage years and his attempts to build a rocket with his friends. During these years, there were some pivotal moments that led to his achievements such as the launch of Sputnik, the support of his teacher Miss Riley, and winning both the county and national science fairs. Despite the difficulties in achieving their goals, he and his friends proved that dreams can come true and that goals can be reached with belief and hard work.

In the year 1957, Sonny’s life had begun to change with the launch of Sputnik, the first rocket in orbit by the Russians. Sonny was a quiet and ordinary teenager. Seeing this event in the sky above his own backyard, Sonny felt as though he could touch the rocket. For the first time in his life, an extraordinary event was happening in Coalwood. This significant event inspired Sonny to build his own rocket. Sonny had wanted to prove to his father that he could go to college and leave Coalwood. The reason why Sonny couldn’t take the class was Dorothy Plunk, his secret love, because her grades were better than Sonny’s to take calculus. Without Sputnik, none of these events would have happened to Sonny and his friends. Turner was convinced to add a calculus class but it was limited to only 6 people. Sonny wanted Quentin, the most hard working student in his class, to join the Rocket boy’s team. Sonny and the boys needed calculus to be able to analyze the book. Miss Riley came to their help by giving them a book, which was invaluable for them, about building rockets. Sonny and Quentin tried hard to find sources of knowledge about building rockets but nothing helped them with building a rocket. Despite the difficulties that Sonny had while representing his project at the National Science Fair, he triumphed in the end, which opened the doors for him to go out of Coalwood and get a college education. She was so happy to see them interested in such different work than football, which was more popular than rockets at the high school. Being the winner of the National Science Fair. However, the book itself would not be enough. Turner was not thinking the same as she was thinking. Miss Riley already chose Sonny as she thought he was the one who knew the most in the group.
