Sport and Spectacle
Sports today are a way of life for people. Friends have been both gained and lost through the viewing of sports. Some sporting events have even been turned into unofficial holidays for many. I am sure that almost every American can honestly say that most years on the last Sunday in January they gather around either their own television or a friend's television with their snacks and beverage for the all important Superbowl. Many people would say that the Superbowl is the most important day of the year. Well with all the hype and spectacle of the game why wouldn't people feel that way? I'm sure that most advertisers would also agree that Superbowl Sunday is the most important event of the year. It is crazy to think that a little sporting event has now taken on more importance to people then such holidays as Thanksgiving or Christmas. You can't even think about these two holidays without associating them with football. I know in my house the television doesn't get changed from the football games on holidays for anything. Sometimes we don't even eat at the table together as a family because the males in the house don't want to miss a second of the game. Of course football isn't the only sport that ha
In this article it is discussed about how as I said earlier sports is basically a way of life for people. I am now going to go back to my three different articles and discuss them more in depth with some outside examples that I have found. This is because the media has marketed these people and really made them larger then life. As I said before this was the article on how people base their lives around sports along with the economics of sports and how much is spent each year on salaries, merchandise, advertisements, and networks spending money to get the sporting events they want. Fortunately women have become a big part of sports recently with the help of women like Venus and Serena Williams, Mia Hamm, Lisa Leslie, Michelle Kwan, and the woman making huge headlines in the recent weeks for being the first woman to be allowed to compete in a men's professional golf tournament Annika Sorentstam. Sports fans identify with their team or stars on the team, and through media they acquire information and understanding about them as well as feel emotional identification with them. They follow their favorite team with racing hearts and trembling wallets. That person is probably a multimillionaire just for coming up with one of the silliest ideas ever. Now this was really none of the public's business because the players were on their own time, but of course this was the top story on KATU, KOIN, and KGW (all Portland news stations) for about a week straight. They had decorations in the colors of the schools all over as well as signs ragging on the other team. Although she placed ahead of only eleven players in the tournament she gained the respect and admiration of many. The pretty much answers the next question I had about how much time per week they set aside for sports. An example of this is the Civil War game between Oregon State University and the University of Oregon each year. The results I got were amazing to me.
