A cesarean section is a surgical procedure where a doctor makes an incision in a woman’s abdomen and uterus walls to remove a baby. Approximately 22-25% of all births in the United States are by cesarean section. (Giving birth by cesarean section.)
There is nothing new about cesarean section as it is mentioned in both eastern and western cultures in folklore in the 1500’s. The earliest use of a cesarean section was extracting a fetus from a dead or dying mother for religious reasons. A Swiss farmer carried out the first recorded cesarean in which the mother and baby survived in the 1500’s also. Early in the pregnancy most doctors like to give the pregnant women an ultrasound (sonogram).
A planned cesarean section conditions would include; a maternal history on invasive uterine surgery, breech or transverse positioning of the fetus, multiple fetuses (three or more), placenta previa, an out break of mothers genital herpes, if the mother has preclamsia or if the fetus has a fetal illness or abnormality that would make a vaginal birth risky and if the baby is to large. Sex can resume again at approximately four weeks after your cesarean section. Then they place a screen in front of you so you do not have to see the initial incision being made. )
This condition is also diagnosed with a routine physical exam and ultrasound performed by your doctor. This condition is found by the use the transvaginal ultrasonography screening during the first and early second trimester of pregnancy. All other attempts of stimulating contractions or getting the fetus to move downward have failed. )
This is where the implantation of the placenta in the uterus is partially or totally covering the cervical os. There is no explanation of what causes placenta abruption but in many cases the woman has chronic high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, smokes and or uses alcohol or cocaine. If more than half the placenta detaches you will have severe bleeding with severe contractions, the most common first signs of this are abdominal pain, rapid heart rate, an increase or decrease of fetal movement, a change in fetal heart rate and pattern and also a severe back ache. There are three different types of placenta previa which are; complete placenta previa where the cervical os is completely covered, partial placenta previa where only a portion of the cervical os is covered and marginal placenta previa which extends just to the edge of the cervical os.
