Ruminagui
He was called by the Spanish conquerors Ruminagui, Irruminabi or Orominabi. According to some colonial historians Rumiñahui was Huayna Capac's son in an Ati, which was a lineage of Quito. Struggle for independence was not a new thing for an Ati, who had accompanied Atahualpa. When he saw Atahualpa defeated and all the vassals running away, he came back home, in order to organize a warlike defense. He assumed rapidly, dictatorial powers, and called all the peoples around Quito for the defense against the "barbudos", as he called the Spanish conquerors for their long beards. Rumiñahui punished
000 men for the organization of the indigenous resistance, and some heroes, such as, Zopozopangui, Nina, Razo-Razo, Quingalumba, etc, helped him. When he arrived to Quito, he also destroyed it, he did the same with the god sun or Acllacunas, then took out all the idols and jewels from the temples, picked all the gold and precious stones from the houses, brought together more than 5000 young indigenous, 11 Atahualpa's sons with all their baggage, and Quito remained desolate. An Inca betrayer assassinated Quisquis and the Spanish burned Calicuchima alive. cruelty the people whom not assisted, with the same attitude other compatriots like Quisquis, Calicuchima, Eplicachima followed Rumiñahui demands. Benalcazar started his persecution and found Rumiñahui in a distant and almost inaccessible mountain of the eastern cordillera, near Pillaro, and then he took him back to Quito. Rumiñahui started to go back and in his way he burned shacks of Mocha and Llactacunga, with strategic intentions, in that way he could eliminate possible lodgings for the foreigners. The resistance force was very well organized, they were ready to defeat the invaders, when suddenly began the eruption of the volcano Tungurahua, in July, 1534, and almost all the Indians saw in it the wrath of the divine expression and the announcement of a fatality, so they run away scared. With Rumiñahui's death the last flames of indigenous courage extinguished. Benalcazar tortured him in order to make him tell the place he hid the treasures, but the Inca never said a word, and when he did, he pointed out far away sites or places impossible to arrive. In this way Rumiñahui entertained Benalcazar for some days, but the Spanish conquerors got tired of being mocked so much, they had decided to execute the hero.
